Eating Disorders
Eating disorders are incredibly common, with an estimated 30 million people in the United States alone currently experiencing one. The fact that so many people struggle with this issue is a testament to how important it is that we take steps to better care for ourselves and others.
At Psyhance, we specialize in integrative psychiatric care for individuals suffering with an eating disorder. We take a holistic approach to treating this complex psychiatric illness, combining evidence-based therapies rooted in science to address the underlying feelings and behaviors that drive disordered eating. In addition, our telepsychiatry services promote access to integrative health professionals from the comfort of your own home.
Types of Eating Disorders
Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by extreme restriction of food intake, resulting in severe weight loss and a failure to maintain a healthy body weight.
People with anorexia may also engage in excessive exercise, purging behaviors (such as vomiting), use of laxatives or diuretics, or other forms of psychological control over food intake. Anorexia is often accompanied by distorted body image, fear of gaining weight, and low self-esteem.
Bulimia nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by regular episodes of binge eating followed by compensatory behaviors such as purging (vomiting), fasting, excessive exercise, or misuse of laxatives or diuretics. The primary concern with bulimia is the cycle of binging and compensating rather than the amount of food being consumed.
People with bulimia often feel a lack of control when it comes to their eating habits and may also experience distorted body image, intense guilt or shame about their eating behavior, and/or low self-esteem.
Binge eating disorder (BED) is an eating disorder characterized by frequent episodes of binge eating without any compensatory behaviors such as purging afterwards. BED is often accompanied by feelings of guilt or shame about one’s eating habits, as well as sadness and distress related to overeating episodes.
People with BED may also struggle with obesity due to the large amounts of food they consume during binges. Unlike bulimia nervosa and anorexia nervosa, BED does not involve any intentional attempts to restrict food intake prior to binging episodes. However, people with BED may still be at risk for developing physical health problems due to their overeating habits.
Other Specified Feeding and Eating Disorders (OSFED) are a set of disorder symptoms that don't meet the diagnostic criteria for anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or binge eating disorder. Though they might not seem as severe as some of these other disorders, OSFEDs can be just as disorienting and debilitating. It's important to remember that it is never too late to seek help and find healthy solutions.
Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) is an eating disorder characterized by fear of and lack of interest in food. This can often lead to resulting malnutrition, dehydration, and failure to gain weight in healthy ways. Although it is most common among children and adolescents, ARFID can affect people of all ages. ARFID should be approached from a patient-focused perspective, taking the time to understand the root causes at play. With proper support and guidance, many individuals have found freedom from the struggles of living with ARFID.
