Symptoms of PTSD
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) lists four symptom clusters associated with PTSD. These are grouped according to how long they have been present since the traumatic event occurred.
The first cluster is known as intrusive memories. This includes re-experiencing the event in the form of flashbacks, nightmares, or upsetting thoughts about the trauma. It’s also common for people with PTSD to avoid anything related to their trauma, such as situations or conversations that remind them of it in some way. They may also have trouble remembering certain elements of their trauma or feel emotionally numb overall.
Second cluster is the avoidance cluster. It is a behavior used by some to bring comfort during times of distress. This avoidance can be anything from refraining from activities or situations that cause stress, to deliberately avoiding people and places susceptible to trauma.
The third cluster is known as negative changes in mood and cognition. This includes feeling guilt, shame, or fear related to their experience, as well as difficulty sleeping, concentrating, and forming new relationships. Other changes include negative beliefs about oneself and one’s environment, such as believing that one is in danger all the time or that people cannot be trusted.
The fourth cluster is known as changes in arousal and reactivity. This includes being easily startled by sudden noise or movements and having angry outbursts more often than usual. People with this symptom may also find themselves more easily irritable than before they experienced trauma, resulting in increased stress levels overall.
Finally, people with PTSD may engage in reckless behaviors like substance abuse or self-harming activities in order to cope with their distressful emotions associated with their trauma experience(s).
